The 12th annual Spirit of the Heart Virtual Awards Gala & Fundraiser, to be conducted as a virtual event on Saturday, October 16th, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM EST, provides an opportunity for individuals to support the efforts of the ABC to remove barriers to optimal heart health in minority populations.

Scheduled for Saturday, October 16th, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM EST, the 12th annual Spirit of the Heart Virtual Awards Gala Fundraiser provides an opportunity for individuals to support the efforts of the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) to promote their mission of removing barriers to health care with a goal of decreasing the rate of cardiovascular disease, including stroke, in minority populations.

Founded in 1974 by Richard Allen Williams, MD, FACC, founder and president of the Minority Health Institute and former president of the National Medical Association, the ABC has worked tirelessly to address inequities in cardiovascular health. Comprising more than 2000 clinicians, lay Community Health Advocates, and corporate supporters, the ABC endeavors to eliminate disparities in heart health by promoting accessibility of affordable care and disseminating information designed to improve the health and well-being of individuals of color with or at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Honorees at this year’s Spirit of the Heart Virtual Awards Gala & Fundraiser include Hilliard (Hilly) Paige, who is vice president of patient and professional advocacy relations at Esperion Therapeutics and who will be honored with  the  Health Equity Champion Award; Daphne P. Ferdinand, PhD, RN, who is executive director of the Healthy Heart Community Prevention Project and who is the recipient of the Dr. Walter M. Booker Health Promotion Award; and Lisa A. Cooper, MD, MPH, who is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor, James F. Fries Professor of Medicine, and Director of both the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity and the Johns Hopkins Urban Health  Institute.  Dr Cooper is the recipient of the Health Equity Legend in Motion Award.

Serving in the capacity of Mistress of Ceremony are Icilma Fergus, MD, and Barbara Hutchinson, MD, PhD — both ABC Gala Chairpersons — and Cassandra A. McCullough, MBA, Chief Executive Officer of the ABC.

Entertainment at the event will be provided by the Grammy-winning gospel singer Jonathan McReynolds, the a capella family singing sensation WanMor, and DJ Vince Adams.

Upcoming ABC events include the virtual Leading With Heart: Boosting Vaccine Confidence Webinar on Thursday, October 21, 2021, as well as numerous Spirit of the Heart community events through 2022.
